Optimarin AS was founded in 1994 in Stavanger, Norway and was one of the first companies in the world to develop a system for environmentally friendly purification of ballast water.
The premise for the product development was not to use any chemicals and leave no residual products that are harmful to the ocean or the environment. In 2000, we were honoured by installing the world’s first ballast water treatment system on board the cruise ship Regal Princess.
After several years of testing, developing and patenting new technology, type approval was finally obtained for the Optimarin Ballast Water Treatment System in 2009, in accordance with Guideline 8 and the ‘International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004’.
The Optimarin BWTS uses approved technology that significantly exceeds the strict requirements set out in the IMO Convention. In 2016, Optimarin was the first company to receive approval by the US Coast Guard under their significantly more strick requirements.
Nobody knows the future, but Optimarin intend to be a leading provider of Ballast Water Treatment Systems for the next 25 years as well.
Innovation at the core
“Remain a frontrunner through innovation”
We intend to remain a leading provider of BWTS and leverage our technology and know-how to develop applications to protect marine life.
The company has through its 27-year history been a leader in the development of the BWTS industry. Being an early industry pioneer has not stopped the company from continuously improving its product, work processes and service offering to our customers.
By completing a truly impressive test program for new filters, where two filters were tested simultaneously for all salinities, Optimarin’s BWTS remains a leader in the business with its new IMO certificate and revised US Coast Guard certificate with 2 hours holding time.
Going forward, we will focus our product development work along two dimensions based on customer feedback and market requirements:
Improving the existing system with respect to footprint, functionality and operational features
Using the company expertise to develop new applications based on our technology knowledge and experience with the goal of expanding into new markets such as biofouling and fish farming.
Research & Development will be based on our overall goal to protect marine life through innovation, meeting our customer’s demand with cost efficient solutions and contributing to the development of our industry.
